AI, Artificial Intelligence and [Prompt] Art.

The advent of new technologies that make use, or rather, that are supported by artificial intelligence has seen a strong increase in the world of art in recent years.

I recently co-curated a group exhibition of so-called Prompt Art and also participated as an artist presenting two works of “Prompt Art”.

Prompt Art has developed thanks to the enormous leaps and bounds that technologies that use artificial intelligence have made to achieve a specific result. In our case, creating a work of art starting from a descriptive command, called “Prompt”.

For about two years, the so-called platforms or Apps that use the “Text to Image” function have also been allowing people who are not skilled in drawing or photography to create an image starting from a simple text description.

This “revolution” touches on a delicate topic such as that of intellectual property, copyright and reproduction rights because if these apps and online platforms return a new image that has never existed before, in reality Artificial Intelligence has in any case been instructed to “take” millions of images, texts and instructions from the huge web, a basis on which to build and “learn”.

All that information was then previously entered by millions of internet users. Including famous works of art and photographs by well-known photographers.

So many are fighting against their development because they “steal” work and ideas from those who are artists, photographers, graphic designers and illustrators by profession, putting the very functionality of these professional figures at risk.

Others, on the other hand, recall that even photography at its birth seemed to threaten the whole art system as the end of the drawn and painted imaginary, due to its perfect truthfulness and relevance to reality. Then we realized how much photography was a new medium that could very well join the classical Plastic Arts and indeed help them for new developments and accelerating their construction processes.

These apps and platforms also give the possibility to have one’s own photo or work of art as a starting point and from this, by adding text (the so-called “prompt” command), obtain a completely new image but based on one’s own material archival.

So here an interesting world also opens up for me as an artist.-

I have been working with the “new technologies” for two decades and at every step that they have taken I have evolved with them by probing, experimenting and keeping up with the times.

Bringing my art into these virtual worlds has allowed me to expand real spaces into these new latent spaces of neural networks.

The results I get are the result of hours and days of patient work. Many apps are easy to use but if you want to get specific and professional results you have to work hard on them.

These ‘Text to Image’ apps have obviously vetoed, a rather strong censorship to curb one’s instincts by avoiding generating images that do not go against common morality and avoid discrimination and problems around the world of sexuality.

However, they also allowed you to imagine yourself in the role of a King, a Fairy, an Ogre, a Sorceress, a Firefighter, a Superhero, a Warrior, a dancer, for example.

In short, they make millions of people dream like when I was a child and I dreamed of becoming an astronaut one day. An adult game yet to be explored.

The implications and applications are endless. During 2023 there should be an expansion of the offer which also includes the creation of “text to video” videos.

It is clear that Artificial Intelligence draws on an internet aesthetic, many references are missing which catch the eye for someone like me born shortly after the mid-1900s.

However, there remains a large pool of creativity and whether we like it or not, it will soon undergo such progress that we will no longer be able to distinguish the so-called reality from the digital construction.

Many countries in the world have been fighting for years against Deep Fake or the technology that allows you to change faces, gestures and landscapes of a video; with all the political and moral implications that this can bring about.

But the “democratization” of the internet for everyone put enormous communicative power in everyone’s hands.

For this reason, the networks where Artificial Intelligence can go to fish for data are being contained in watertight compartments. There is a Dark Web that such Intelligence is better not to cross its threshold.

La IA, L’Intelligenza Artificiale e la [Prompt] Art.

L’avvento delle nuove tecnologie che fanno uso, o meglio, che vengono supportate dalla intelligenza artificiale ha visto in questi ultimi anni un forte incremento anche nel mondo dell’Arte.

Ho recentemente co-curato una mostra di gruppo di cosiddetta Prompt Art e vi ho anche partecipato come artista presentando due lavori di “Prompt Art”.

La Prompt Art si è sviluppata grazie agli enormi passi da gigante che hanno fatto le tecnologie che si avvalgono di una intelligenza artificiale per raggiungere un risultato specifico. Nel nostro caso, realizzare un’opera d’arte partendo da un comando descrittivo, detto “Prompt”.

Da circa due anni le cosiddette piattaforme o App che utilizzano la funzione “Text to Image” stanno permettendo anche a persone che non sono abili nel disegno o nella fotografia di creare un’immagine partendo da una semplice descrizione testuale.

Questa “rivoluzione” tocca un argomento delicato come quello della proprietà intellettuale, del diritto di autore e di riproduzione perché se tali app e piattaforme on line restituiscono una nuova immagine mai esistita prima d’ora, in realtà l’Intelligenza Artificiale è stata comunque istruita a “prendere” dall’enorme rete web milioni di immagini e testi ed istruzioni una base su cui costruire ed “imparare”.

Tutte quelle informazioni sono quindi state precedentemente inserite da milioni di utenti internet. Comprese opere d’arte famose e fotografie di fotografi conosciuti ai più.

Quindi molti si stanno battendo contro il loro sviluppo perché “rubano” lavoro ed idee a chi fa l’artista, il fotografo, il grafico e l’illustratore di professione, mettendo a rischio la funzionalità stessa di queste figure professionali.

Altri invece ricordano che anche la fotografia alla sua nascita sembrava minacciare tutto il sistema dell’arte come la fine dell’immaginario disegnato e dipinto, a causa della sua perfetta veridicità ed attinenza con il reale. Poi ci si accorse quanto la fotografia fosse un nuovo media che poteva benissimo affiancarsi alle Arti Plastiche classiche ed anzi aiutare le stesse per nuovi sviluppi ed accellerandone i processi costruttivi.

Queste app e piattaforme danno anche la possibilità di avere come punto di partenza una propria foto o propria opera d’arte e da questa, aggiungendo del testo, (il cosiddetto comando “prompt”), ottenere una immagine completamente nuova ma basata sul proprio materiale d’archivio.

Qui si apre dunque un mondo interessante anche per me come artista.-

Io lavoro da due decenni con le “nuove tecnologie” e ad ogni passo che queste hanno fatto io mi sono evoluto con esse sondando, sperimentando e stando al passo con i tempi.

Portare la mia arte in questi mondi virtuali mi ha permesso di ampliare gli spazi reali in questi nuovi spazi latenti di reti neurali.

I risultati che ottengo sono frutto di ore e giorni di paziente lavoro. Molte app sono di facile uso ma se si vogliono ottenere risultati specifici e professionali bisogna lavorarci molto sopra.

Queste app ‘Text to Image’ hanno ovviamente posto un veto, una censura piuttosto forte per porre freno ai propri istinti evitando di generare immagini che non andassero contro la morale comune ed evitassero discriminazioni e problemi intorno al mondo della sessualità.

Hanno però anche consentito di giocare ad immaginarsi ad esempio nei panni di un Re, di una Fatina, di un Orco, di una Maga, di un Pompiere, di un Supereroe, di un Guerriero, di una ballerina.

Insomma, fanno sognare milioni di persone come quando ero bambino e sognavo un giorno di diventare un Astronauta. Un gioco per adulti ancora tutto da sondare.

Le implicazioni e le applicazioni sono infinite. Nel corso del 2023 si dovrebbe avere un ampliamento dell’offerta che prevede anche la creazione di video “text to video”.

È evidente che l’Intelligenza Artificiale peschi in una estetica da internet, mancano molti riferimenti che ad uno come me nato poco dopo la metà del 900 salta all’occhio.

Rimane comunque un bel bacino di creatività e che si voglia o no, subirà, a breve, progressi tali che non riusciremo più a distinguere la cosiddetta realtà dalla costruzione digitale.

Molti Stati nel mondo si stanno battendo già da anni contro il Deep Fake ovvero la tecnologia che consente di modificare volti, gesti e paesaggi di un video; con tutte le implicazioni politiche e morali che questo può far accadere.

Ma la “democratizzazione” dell’internet per tutti a messo in mano ad ognuno un potere comunicativo enorme.

Per questo si stanno arginando in compartimenti stagni le reti dove l’Intelligenza Artificiale può andare a pescare dati. Esiste un Dark Web che tale Intelligenza è meglio non ne varchi la soglia.
